An hour later, Jinn was standing in the living room staring out the window at the desolate neighborhood. He’d been imagining what the streets looked like outside of his home before the war that left the world quiet, and cold. He imagined families enjoying barbecues, and children playing along the sidewalks. This was a suburban neighborhood, one that would draw in parents looking for a quiet upbringing for their children. Suddenly, he was full of envy. He wanted the simplicity of the life that was offered to those imaginary people.

“Jinn,” Rosie appeared in the room and spoke his name softly.

“Rosie, you’re back.” He closed the curtain, once again hiding the world outside his home. “Where is Sybella? What did she say?”

"Sybella is missing." Rosie shook her head. “I couldn’t find her.”

"What?" He stepped closer to her with his urgent whisper. “What do you mean she is missing? How is she missing?”

"I went to her room, and she's not there. I checked with the fairy guards and they can't find her. Vilar is on lockdown now," Rosie reported. “I spoke to Briar; they’re trying to keep this quiet. If anyone finds out she is gone, it’s going to cause chaos.”

"Right. Well, do we have any lead? We need to find her.”

"Jinn, there was brimstone in her room," Rosie added with hesitation. “I don’t know if she used it but it was there.”

"What? Are you sure?”

“Yes. I didn’t tell anyone else. What if she left for good?” Rosie pulled the evidence from within her jacket pocket and showed it to Jinn. “Do you think she would do that?”

"Rosie, I know what this looks like but try not to jump to any conclusions. We can’t just assume she left.”

"Well, she can see everything, right? Maybe she knows we aren't going to win this. Maybe she decided to duck out early and save herself," Rosie tossed out one of the many theories she’d concocted since finding Sybella’s room empty.

"Sybella would never do that. Wherever she is, she has her reasons. It’s not to stab us in the back." Jinn had known the Seer for centuries. He’d seen her face things that would make normal people piss themselves in fear and she never backed down. He couldn’t see her suddenly turning into a coward now.

"Okay, so what do you suggest we do now?"

"I hate to say it and I know how much you’ll want to fight me on this, but we have to go to Genesis. He is the only one who has any understanding about what's happening with Nitara."

"It keeps coming back to that man." Rosie huffed and rolled her eyes.

"Do you think you can handle this?" Jinn wanted to consider Rosie’s feelings but Nitara’s life was on the line.

"For Nitara, I can." Rosie glanced at the bar. “I may actually be the one to need a drink this time around.”

"Thank you," Jinn chuckled. “You know I wouldn’t ask this unless it was absolutely necessary but could you find him and bring him here? I would do it but I don’t want to leave Nitara alone.
